Four children shared their hopes and dreams in a 2010 World Cup documentary. We followed up four years later in this gang-ravaged area, to find out what has happened to them. Vicky is in prison, Ridaah is trying to remove himself from the entanglement of gangsterism and drugs, Ryan is trying to finish his training in Information Technology and Stacey is redoing matric. In four years, every one of them lost a family member or loved one in gang related violence. According to Amelia Abrahams, (the Quality Control & Support Officer for Sportstec, an international sport development agency that works with UNICEF) sport helps mitigate the pressures experienced by at-risk youth. “Sport can teach you something invaluable. Of course it’s not some overnight miracle. It’s like we are planting seeds of encouragement. The season passes; we move on, but one day, for some, those seeds take root…”
